Rich in History

Originally, this historic site served as the official residence of Royal Governor Lewis Morris, from 1740 to 1742. Situated at the southwest corner of King (now Warren) and Second (now State) Streets since 1730, it remained a prominent landmark until 1837 when it was demolished and rebuilt.

The year 1784 witnessed extensive renovations, particularly on the first floor, where multiple rooms were combined into a single, grand space known as the Long Room. This elegant chamber held the honor of serving as the United States Capitol until December of that year.

During a pivotal period in American history, from December 11 to December 18, 1787, this location played a vital role as the venue for the New Jersey ratification convention for the United States Constitution. Notably, it hosted the reception for President-elect George Washington on April 21, 1789, as he embarked on his journey from Mount Vernon to his first inauguration in New York City.

In a final transformation in 1836, the property transitioned into the possession of the First Mechanics and Manufacturers Bank. This transition marked the end of the original tavern’s era, paving the way for the exquisite property that stands today, an architectural gem that has graced Trenton since 1839.
